Posted by Meike MacGregor on Tuesday, October 1st, 2019 at 2:36pm.

According to reports from the Pew Research Center and 2018 census records, there has been a recent trend in families using multi-generational housing. The report states that as of April 2018, a record high, nearly 64 million American citizens are living in a household with 2 or more generations of family members. The number translates to about 20% or 1/5 homes in the United States that now live in a multigenerational household.

The last time that housing figure reached 20% was back in 1950. Three decades later in 1980 the number has dropped to 12% of homes. In the recession of 2008, the number increased greatly and then leveled out. This growing trend is not specific to any one racial group and encompasses all age, sex, and ethnic backgrounds.

So why the increase in popularity for this type of household? There are multiple factors contributing to this trend. One reason is that more young adults staying home, or “boomeranging” The report also suggests that the age group of 18 to 34 for reported living with their parents much more often than prior years. People are also getting married later in life or choosing to live with their parents for economic reasons. Another big factor is the cost and quality of health care for elder family members.

Quality of care concerns and huge costs has shifted a move away from corporate nursing homes As Americans live longer, chronic conditions and health problems become more prevalent. Families are opting to live together and provide healthcare from within the family unit vs. seeking corporate nursing home care or assisted living facilities.
