Important Steps to Prepare Your Singer Island Condo for a Storm

Posted by Meike MacGregor on Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023 at 12:45pm.

As hurricane season approaches, you need to be well-prepared to protect your condo from potential weather emergencies. While hurricane preparation is similar across all types of dwellings, Singer Island condos have some unique considerations.

Hurricane-Impact Glass

If your condo is equipped with "hurricane-impact glass" on sliding glass doors and windows, you've made a wise investment in your property's safety and security. These windows are constructed with impact-resistant glass treated with a layer of PVB or EVA. While they may shatter upon impact from flying objects, they remain attached to the inner membrane and window frame, reducing the risk of dangerous flying shards of glass.

Rest assured that this feature provides peace of mind, especially if you cherish the breathtaking views that come with living in your condo.

Condo-Specific Emergency Preparation

Living in a condo requires some additional precautions when it comes to hurricane preparedness:

  • Add Towels around Doors and Windows: Even with hurricane-resistant windows, spaces around them may leak during severe impacts. Placing rolled-up towels at the base can help absorb water.
  • Elevator Awareness: Elevators may not function during or after a storm due to power outages. Plan to use the stairs, and if you require assistance or have mobility concerns, please inform the Condo Association before the storm arrives.
  • Contact Your Condo Association: Before the hurricane arrives, contact the Condo Association to address any questions or concerns. Limited access to emergency personnel during a hurricane may hinder communication, so proactive communication is essential.

Preparing Your Unit

Ensure you take the necessary steps to prepare your unit for a potential hurricane:

  • Clear patios and balconies.
  • Set the freezer and fridge to the coldest settings in case of electricity loss.
  • Stock up on non-perishable food items for several days.
  • Do a refrigerator and freezer cleanout to avoid food spoilage if power is lost.
  • Charge your mobile devices and unplug electronics and appliances.
  • Fill your bathtub to store water for washing and toilet use.
  • Protect personal property by moving valuable items away from windows and doors.
  • Designate a safe room.
  • Shut off the water and electricity if you decide to evacuate.

Other Checklist Items

  • Photograph or video your home and valuables for insurance documentation.
  • Contact your insurance company to understand their requirements for claims.
  • Create a survival kit with essential supplies. This should include fresh drinking water, batteries, canned/dry foods, proper identification, important documents and phone numbers, insurance information, proof of condo ownership, cash, and medications.
  • Prepare your vehicle and boat if applicable.
  • Familiarize yourself with the evacuation route.
Taking these precautions will help you feel more at ease during weather emergencies and allow you to fully enjoy all the beautiful weather days in
South Florida.
